Band of Sisters by Lauren Willig – Book Review

I really loved this novel.  Smith College sent graduates to France during World War I in an effort to bring help, hope and improved lives to devastated villages.  The main characters, Kate Moran and her former college roommate, Emmie Van Alden are two of these women.  Since no one really understands what they will find once they finally arrive at their destination, there was no opportunity to prepare for the emotional and physical effects.

The novel follows some of the eighteen women’s stories during their time giving aid.  I loved the character growth, the unfolding and changing relationships between the women, but most importantly the historical accuracy that Willig has included was what helped make the novel really riveting.

I highly recommend this novel.  I suggest that you read the notes in the back of the book because Willig tells you about the real women who took part in the Unit.  Well done, Willig!
