Disaster’s Children by Emma Sloley – Book Review

Disasters Children

Marlo has lived her entire life in a compound with people who are planning for the climate disaster they believe will arrive sooner rather than later.  After her friends leave, Marlo at twenty-five, is the youngest of the group.  While she believes much of what she’s been taught, on her brief occasional forays into the “Disaster” (as she’s been taught to call the rest of the world), she questions her understanding of what’s going on.  The people seem to live lives with some form of happiness, so could her parents be wrong about how much these others are suffering?

After a stranger, arrives, Marlo begins to have a change of heart.  She drops her plan to leave for a temporary job, and re-commits to the ranch.  However, it becomes clear to her that something strange and potentially dangerous is happening within the ranch.

This is a coming-of-age story with well-written characters, a compelling look into the survivalist mind, and the dangers of keeping young people deliberately in the dark.  I highly recommend this novel.  Well done, Sloley!
